When bilingual families ask me when they should start teaching their children Spanish at home, I always say as soon as possible! For me, with twins, that meant when my babies were 6 months old I started speaking to them in Spanish. For some, they may start sooner and others years later. Whether you grew up hearing traditional Spanish lullabies or not, it is never too late to bring them to your family.
This post is for all those bilingual parents who are looking for fun ways to start teaching their toddlers and babies Spanish. You will get to learn my 10 favorite Spanish lullabies, or canciones de cuna, and I included English translations for each lullaby with videos to help you learn.
translation
Sleep my child, sleep my love
Sleep little piece of my heart
This child of mine that was born at night
Wants me to take them for a drive
This child of mine that was born during the day
Wants me to take them to a candy shop
Sleep my child, sleep my love
Sleep little piece of my heart
La Lechuza
La lechuza, la lechuza
Hace shhh, hace shhh
Hagamos silencio
Como la lechuza
Que hace shhhh
translation
The owl, the owl
Says shhh, says shhh
Let us be quiet
Like the owl
That says shhhh
Arrorró mi niño
Arrorró mi niño,
arrorró mi sol,
arrorró pedazo
de mi corazón.
Este niño lindo
se quiere dormir
y el pícaro sueño
no quiere venir.
Este lindo niño
se quiere dormir…
cierra los ojitos
y los vuelve a abrir.
translation
Hush my child,
Hush my sun,
Hush piece of my heart.
This beautiful child
wants to sleep
and the sneaky dream
doesn’t want to come.
This beautiful child
wants to sleep…
Close your little eyes
and open them again.
Dormir
Por José Luis Orozco
Dormir, dormir
que cantan los gallos de San Agustín
Dormir, dormir
Las niñas bonitas se duermen aquí
Soñar, soñar
Con una estrellita que empieza a brillar
Dormir, dormir
Que cantan los gallos
Solo para ti
Dormir, dormir
Que cantan los gallos de San Agustín
translation
Sleep, sleep
Sing the roosters of St. Augustine
Sleep, sleep
Beautiful girls sleep here
Dream, dream
with a little star that starts to shine
Sleep, sleep
The roosters sing
just for you
Sleep, Sleep
Sing the roosters of St. Augustine
Estrellita
Estrellita, ¿dónde estás?
Me pregunto qué serás.
En el cielo y en el mar,
un diamante de verdad.
Estrellita, ¿dónde estás?
Me pregunto qué serás.

A la nanita, nana
A la nanita nana, nanita ella, nanita ella
Mi niño tiene sueño, bendito sea, bendito sea
A la nanita nana, nanita ella, nanita ella
Mi niño tiene sueño, bendito sea, bendito sea.
Fuentecita que corre clara y sonora
Ruiseñor que en la selva cantando llora
Calla mientras la cuna se balancea
A la nanita nana, nanita ella.
A la nanita nana, nanita ella, nanita ella
translation
Lullaby, lullaby, lullaby -by
my baby’s sleepy, bless them, bless them.
Lullaby, lullaby, lullaby -by
my baby’s sleepy, bless them, bless them.
Little spring bubbling clear and loud,
nightingale singing plaintively in the forest:
keep quiet while the cradle rocks to and fro,
lullaby, lullaby, lullaby -by.
Lullaby, lullaby, lullaby -by
my baby’s sleepy, bless them, bless them.

Duerme Ya
Duerme ya, dulce bien
Mi capullo de nardo
Despacito duérmete
Como la abeja en la flor.
Duerme ya, dulce bien
Duerme ya, dulce amor
Dulces sueños tendrás
Al oír mi canción.
translation
Sleep now, dear darling,
My bud of tuberose flowers.
Softly go to sleep
Like the bee on the flower.
Sleep now, dear darling,
Sleep now, sweet love
You’ll have sweet dreams
While hearing my song.
Calla Pequeño
Duerme, pequeño, no tengas temor
Duerme, pequeño, no tengas temor

translation
The little chicks say
Cheep, cheep, cheep,
When they are hungry
And when they are cold.
The mother hen looks for
Corn and wheat.
She gives them food
And grants them shelter.
Under mama’s wings,
Huddling up,
Sleep the little chicks
Until the next day.

Collar de Estrellas Por 123 Andres
La luna vino a preguntar
Si estás dormido
Para poderte iluminar
Y soñar contigo
En su collar de bellas estrellas
Te va a dejar jugar
La luna te viene a buscar
Si estás dormido
En su collar de bellas estrellas
Te va a dejar jugar
La luna te viene a buscar
Si estás dormido
translation
The moon came by to ask,
To see if you were asleep
So it could shine your way
And dream with you
In her necklace of beautiful stars

The moon came by looking for you, to see if you were asleep
