Back to school season is upon us and I can practically smell the fresh notebook paper and newly sharpened pencils. Is it too dorky to say that as a teacher, this is one of my favorite times of the whole year? I know, technically it means summer is over and I have to go back to work, but I love teaching so this is my Super Bowl!
While I look forward to heading back to school each year, I also know that there is a lot of anxiety for children starting new classes or new programs. Having bilingual books on hand all about heading back to school can help your child feel excited and prepared.
These are Spanish picture books to read before the first day of school! I love the stories and have recommended them to countless families as they prepare their kids for this next big step.
Si llevas un ratón a la escuela

¿Cómo van a la escuela los dinosaurios?
I love using this Spanish children’s book to help guide my own kiddos about kind ways to behave at school. It is silly and has great questions throughout to ask your kids if that is how they should behave or act at school. I love this as a book for kindergarteners and preschoolers alike.
How do kids all around the world go to school? Learn more with this fun book! Some kids walk to school, others ride a bus or a bicycle, some even ski! This is a really fun Spanish kid’s book talking all about heading back to school in fun and different ways.
Follow along with Lola as she heads to her first day of school! This is such a sweet book to read all about her adventures with her new school. I love this book especially for preschoolers and kindergarteners who want a closer look at what fun lies ahead at their new school.
For any child who is nervous about heading back to school and not knowing anyone, this book can help ease any worries. It talks about all the amazing things that you learn from each other, and the beautiful ways in which students and teachers support each other.
A fun twist on a back to school book where we learn not about students who may feel nervous, but the school itself! Coming to life, we learn all about the colegio and what is worries about with this new school year. My children and students cannot get enough of this fun back to school book.
¡Que nervios! El primer día de escuela
This is a perfect book for the beginning of the year when nerves might be running high. In Que Nervios, kids can follow Sarah Jane Hartwell as she faces her fears and goes to school on the first day. This is especially a great Spanish kids book for kindergarten.
